Colbert in the Spin Zone, was he spun?

January 19, 2007 by

So today marks the greatest day in the character Stephen Colberts career. Mr. Colbert and his characters’ basis Bill O’Reilly. At 8:00 pm I did something I’ve only done a handful of times, turn on The O’Reilly Factor on the FOX News channel, and watched it in it’s entirety. I knew Colbert would be on later and I didn’t know if Colbert would be his character, like when he was at the White House Press Coresspondants Dinner, or like Jon Stewart was on Tucker Carlson’s show back in 2004(2005?).

Anyways Stephen came on around 40 minutes into this Right-Wing bias show called the O’Reilly Factor. Stephen came on into what O’Reilly thought would be a destruction of Colbert. Stephen was smarter than Bill and started off by saying that he would be happy to be nailed by Bill. Being nailed is a  phrase Stephen uses quite often when talking about people his character finds faults in on his show. The interview begins with Colbert handling everything alright. He was in character throughout the interview so he couldn’t simply go after Bill, he had to praise him and just take his insults as if he was getting a golden shower from Jesus. Nothing too big happened on the interview. Stephen got off fairly well and Bill handled it the best he could.

After the commercial Bill had a chat with some of the guests he used for a segment at the beginning of the show. They talked about Colbert and Stewarts way of handling the news as being “cutting edge” by being “smart asses”. They admitted they were funny but they also said they were only getting by by being “jerks”.

Tonight at 11:30 Colbert will have Bill on his show The Colbert Report. It will probably feature O’Reilly trying to be more humorous in attacking Colbert since he will be talking to the ”stoner demographic” that watches The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I will report on that sometime tonight or tommorow.

Colts-Patriots Preview

January 17, 2007 by

In a match-up that is so perfectly scripted that you wonder if it’s fixed, the Indianapolis  Colts and the New England Patriots will provide many story-lines in the AFC Championship game.

After starting off the season 9-0, the Colts were poised to have the NFL’s top record again. However, they took a turn for the worse, finishing 3-4 in their last seven games for a 12-4 record. Their run defense was historically bad, giving up a league high 173 rushing yards for game. Just like that, the Colts went from Super Bowl contenders to pretenders seemingly heading for another disappointment.  The Colts were matched up against the Chiefs, with top running back Larry Johnson ready to demolish the Colts run defense.

To the surprise of everyone, Johnson was held to a dismal 32 yards on the ground in a Colts 23-8 victory. Another challenge faced them as they squared off against the best defense in the league, the Baltimore Ravens. Although the Ravens held the Colts out of the end-zone, the Colts did the same to the Ravens and won a battle of field goals in a 15-6 upset.

The Patriots dynasty was seemingly over. Despite a 12-4 record, the Patriots were deemed a team that would not get far in the playoffs. It was a sensible assumption, as they lost star safety Rodney Harrison for the entire postseason, and faced a pesky opponent in the New York Jets. Lead by head coach Eric Mangini, student of the Patriots mastermind Bill Belichick, the Jets defeated the Pats in their second regular season encounter. A Jets was possible, probable to some. In the end, the Pats showed why they have won three Super Bowls in the past five years with a 37-16 win over the Jets. Up next lay the team with the best record in the NFL, the San Diego Chargers.

Led by MVP Ladainian Tomlinson, who shattered the record for most touchdowns scored in a single season, the Chargers were a favorite to win the Super Bowl. They had many chances to bury the Patriots, but could not cash in on any of them. In the end,  quarterback Tom Brady led his team to yet another game winning drive, increasing his playoff record to a staggering 12-1.

This Sunday, these two rivals, the Yankees and Red Sox of the NFL, square off for a visit to Miami, home of Super Bowl XLI. Although the Colts defeated the Patriots earlier this season, they have been beat again and again by them in postseason play. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning’s legacy is on the line, as he is still without a championship ring. To make his first Super Bowl, he must beat the golden boy, Tom Brady. Brady has three Super Bowl rings in his pro career as experts wait to see if he can lead his team to yet another. After trading star wide receiver Deion Branch in the off-season, it would be amazing if Brady could lead this injury-plagued team to another league. Some might say it would put him among the elite quarterbacks in NFL history, if not the elite.

The Colts success depends on their newly rejuvinated defense. After safety Bob Sanders returned from injury, the Colts have had a fire lit under them in an amazing turn around. Sanders has proved to be a big difference so far, but can he continue to do so?

Ironically, the biggest storyline of all could be a kicker. After hitting clutch field goals multiple times to help the Patriots become a modern dynasty, Adam Vinatieri was let go by the Patriots, only to sign with the Colts. The Colts winning on a field goal would be the Patriots worst nightmare. Not only do their rivals finally move one step closer to glory, but it would be because of a poor decision in their front office.

24 Review: 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Alright so unless you’ve been under a rock for the past few years you’re realize one of two things. One being that America has been more involved in global terrorism than ever, and that Jack Bauer is one tought mother fucker. Yes Jack Bauer, the hero portrayed by Keifer Sutherland on the FOX show 24. The show has been around since the time of the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the U.S. and has hit hard with American culture, which has never been more apparent than in the four hour season 6 start of the show.

A few weeks back 24′s first four season six episodes were released via Bit Torrent thanks to a DVD release of the episodes getting into the wrong(right?) hands. For those of you who haven’t seen the episodes before last night then you were in for a treat. The season starts with America basically into a hell whole. There have been numerous attacks on the country, in malls, on buses, and in almost every major city or state. The current President Wayne Palmer, the brother of the recently killed off David Palmer, has no choice but to free the imprisoned Jack Bauer who was in a Chinese prison for 20 months since season 5′s end. The President does give them something, which wasn’t ever told on the show but you can expect it to be revealed later on. Within the Presidential cabinet you can see turmoil, which is going to open up future storylines, building up already with the idea of prison camps in America. This is one of the parallels of today’s America to the show. A terrorist, by the name of Fahad(sp?) wants Jack dead because Jack murdered his brother through torture back in ’99. Jack agrees to being handed over to the terrorist in exchange for the location of another man named Asaad who is believed to be behind the terrorist attacks on the U.S.  Jack gives himself up because he feels that he would be dying for something, which is why he wanted to stay alive in China because he didn’t want to die for nothing. It truly reminds the audience that Jack is a bold true Patriot once again.

That’s how the season began, but only for the first few minutes of the first episode. The rest of the four hours goes off with a bang, which I don’t want to spoil a lot of. All I will say is that a main character dies, Jack Bauer handles himself in an extremely dark way, Jack breaks down, the worst fear of anyone in the history of the show is met with reality at the end of the fourth episode, people lie, people join sides for good and bad, and much more happens. I’ll start to post more in depth reviews but since this was a four hour opener I figured I would instead spare my hands the cramping of typing what could easily be a ten page essay, into just giving you some insight and saying go pick up the DVD when it comes out tommorow. It includes future scenes as well, I think 15 minutes of next weeks episode too.

Welcome!
